The use of chunking concept, formulated by George Miller, acknowledges the capacity of working memory. Breaking content into smaller chunks enables the learner to absorb information and reduces opportunities for information processing overload. Due to the ansyncronous structure of on-line coursework teachers/facilitators are not present to monitor information overload or drop off. Chunking information for Instructional Design offers complex information/concepts to be absorbed and manipulated in a manageable size for retention and understanding.

Creating bridges between the chunks of information provides the learner opportunities to make connections and associations within and between the complex concepts being presented.
